​The mission of the PEL Laboratory is to cultivate healthy school settings through the research, development, and advocacy of physical and emotional literacy. Physical and emotional literacy (PEL) refers to the wide variety of movement and emotional capacities (skills, knowledge, and dispositions) that contribute significantly to healthy living outcomes. Our interests specifically lie in advancing seamlessly integrating PEL in schools and increasing understanding of the implications on the health of students, staff, and school communities. As an educational research laboratory, we are committed to training future research scientists who are equipped to conduct sound science with practical significance.

The laboratory is located in the basement of Hatcher Hall, Room 12. The 779 sq. ft. area includes desk space for five graduate assistants, an undergraduate work area, storage cabinets, four desktop computers and a print station, and a conference area complete with video projection and conference calling capabilities. In addition, accelerometers, heart rate monitors, pedometers, personal digital assistants, digital recorders, transcribers, camcorders, tri-play TV units, and several software packages, such as SPSS, SAS, HLM, AMOS, The Observer, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and NVivo are readily available for data collection, coding, and analysis purposes.
